Affirmations as Denial of Feelings
If he were using today’s lingo,
he might say something like
“what you resist, persists.”
If you are angry at someone
and you try to replace your angry thoughts
with loving thoughts,
one of two things will happen.
Either you will be successful
at repressing the anger (a form of denial)
so that it continues to exist in your psyche
even though you pretend that it isn’t there.
Or you won’t be successful.
Actually, here it’s advantageous not to succeed,
because then you will have to deal with the anger,
acknowledge it, find out what triggered it.
